Adventures in Skylar
The Ancient Dragon Riders of Starkfell
The Dragon Riders of Starkfell are a great anomaly in the history of Skylar, in that there is very little information about them – so little, in fact, that even the wisest sages have no knowledge that they ever existed. Under their rule, Starkfell became a grand and formidable city, and the Maekrix (their leader) resided in a decadent palace within Starkfell Volcano itself. The Riders were able to exist peacefully alongside dragons by utilising magical Amulets of Dragonkin, which allowed each rider to form a unique empathic bond with his dragon partner. As dragons live far longer than humanoids, one dragon would often bond with the son or daughter of its original rider, and this could continue for several generations until either the family died out, the dragon died, or the dragon grew weary of the grief of losing a rider and decided to leave the city. Little else is known, as most evidence of the Riders’ lifestyle was destroyed when a great earthquake and the resulting tsunami destroyed the city of Starkfell. The Riders have not been seen in Skylar since, although Su’gi’s ancestral memories show that they fled to somewhere south of Starkfell. An Amulet of Dragonkin once buried deep in the volcano (now known as Strongcliff Volcano) recently resurfaced, and through its use Verris and Rolenn became the first Dragon Riders to set foot on Skylar in 100,000 years.
